Creating in Difficult Times: Why Your Joy Is an Act of Resistance

What has been bringing you joy lately? It’s a question worth sitting with — especially right now, when the world can feel so heavy. This month, mine was editing a podcast interview and watching it back — one of those unexpectedly sweet moments that reminded me why this work matters. I’d love for you to take a moment and ask yourself the same question, because joy, even in small doses, is worth mining.

The state of the world has a way of flooding our nervous systems with fear and sadness. War, uncertainty, ominous forecasts about the future — it can make creating feel not just difficult, but almost impossible. And then our inner world piles on, whispering that we are not good enough, not ready, not worthy. Between the noise outside and the doubt within, so many of us end up frozen — not because we are weak, but because our nervous systems are doing exactly what they were designed to do in conditions that feel unsafe: protect us.

But what if the most important thing we can do right now is create anyway?

Not to bypass what is happening or pretend the world is okay — but because in creating, we spread ripples of love. In showing up as our most joyous selves, we spread hope. We actively resist the systems that want us to stay small and hopeless. Creating is also how we move out of that frozen, low-vibration state and into the higher frequencies of joy and flow. It is both the medicine and the message.

Frida Kahlo painted through chronic pain and political upheaval. James Baldwin wrote some of his most important work in exile. Toni Morrison wrote her first novel as a single mother working full time, because the books she wanted to read simply didn’t exist yet. What they left the world with is an extraordinary gift — proof that creating in difficult times is not naive, it is necessary. Their courage to show up and create despite everything is part of what makes their work so enduring and so deeply human.

So much of what we call imposter syndrome is simply the world’s noise convincing us that we are the problem. The bias, the systems not designed with us in mind, the voices that told us to dim our light — they all leave a mark. But when we place all the responsibility on ourselves to “fix” our fear before we begin, we hand our power over to the very forces trying to silence us. We cannot wait for the world to feel safe enough. Creating is the act of resistance. It is the thing that moves us out of fear and back into our most sovereign, joyful selves.

Journal to Joy Invitations 🌕

This month’s Full Moon — a Pink Moon — is about vision, possibility, and what we withhold from ourselves. Grab your journal and reflect:

  • Where in my life am I still waiting for conditions to feel safe enough to begin?
  • What would I love to create if I were fearless?
  • What is one obvious action I can take today towards making that happen?

Write directly, or simply let a stream of consciousness unfold. There are no rules here.
