Telling our story and whose names get remembered

Hello beautiful,
Happy Sunday… and belated happy solstice!

I hope you have been enjoying the sun and the heat has been okay for you this week?

What has been bringing you JOY this week? Hit me back, I would love to know!

Me? The joy and privilege of getting to learn this amazing practice (I am back in Germany finishing my Rolfing training), to be a student again, to understand how I learn and in doing so, tend to younger Ella who wasn’t able to vocalise or understand that.

And something truly beautiful to witness this month was how the faculty here share a goal to pass on movement wisdom because they love Rolfing. They seem to do it without needing their own name on any of it… I find that beautiful. And unusual in our society. Which leads me to what I have been journeying…

What Have I Been Journeying?

We were studying anatomy last week, and someone in the class asked: “Are these body parts all named after men?” The answer was yes: only one is named after a woman, the rest after European men.

I got to thinking about the planet too in relation to this naming: look at a map and the same pattern is everywhere, with mountains, rivers, towns, countries carrying European men’s names that have nothing to do with that land, but are named that because someone wanted to be remembered, to own something, to feel important.

A friend pointed out that the word vagina translates as a sheath for a sword: a covering built to hold a weapon, rather than language born from the body’s own felt sense of itself. Another interesting pondering around naming 🤔

Which left me wondering… is putting our name on our creation a legitimate way of marking our particular shaping of something within a lineage of teachers who came before us? Or is the desire for a name on it coming from scarcity, fear, or a colonial logic of ownership wearing a creative coat?

What do you think?

Full Moon Journal to JOY Invitations:

Tomorrow brings the Strawberry Moon: June’s full moon, named by Native American Algonquian peoples for the wild strawberries ripening at this time of year. In Europe, the same moon is also called the Honey Moon, or the Mead Moon.

In the Clan Mother tradition, June belongs to the Storyteller, whose medicine asks: who carries the story forward, and how is it remembered?

Grab your Journal to JOY and reflect…

✨ If you created something today, with or without need for your name to be remembered alongside it, what would you make?

✨ Who is part of the lineage you have learnt from, and how do you acknowledge them?

✨ What is your biggest service to the planet? What gifts and talents are you here to share… and how do they make the world a brighter place?

And as the Strawberry Moon rises this weekend, perhaps the question underneath all of these musings is whether what we created made a difference, regardless of whose name sits beside it.

That feels like enough to sit with for one Full Moon…

Let me know what lands.

Biggest loves,
Ella xxx
